Absolutely the best Eastern NC style barbecue found in Western NC

by coplawyer

Bill Spoon's serves the only barbecue I've ever had that's truly addicting. I've shared it with friends and family on the west coast and now I have to ship it regularly. This is Charlotte's "real deal" Eastern NC style with no sugar or tomato sauce, just the smoked cue seasoned with vinegar, red pepper and the passion for excellence that permeates every lean morsel. Top if off with crispy hush puppies, Charlotte's best sweet tea, and Spoon's banana pudding, and you'll be in hog heaven. Come hungry but don't come late; Spoon's does such a good business during the day it's not open for dinner.

Still the best

I am sad to see that Mister Spoon died, but his family is keeping the great food coming. Still the best BBQ (Eastern that is) in Charlotte.

BEST BBQ EVER!!!!!

by taylor_killian

I am not quite sure where the other person giving this review was eating at but it sure wasnt Bill Spoons. This BBQ is by far the best! My husband and i just recently moved from Texas and my uncle owns a BBQ place in Memphis so I have had plenty of BBQ in my day and this is the best BBQ I have ever had. Sorry uncle. The service is very friendly they make you feel right at home and the prices can't be beat. I bring family here every time they visit and now they are requesting I bring Bill Spoons BBQ when i visit back in Texas.

Very disappointing

by musicfan76

I can't understand how Bill Spoon's is so highly rated. I've eaten barbecue in 16 states and I'm a certfied Kansas City Barbecue Judge. I love Carolina style pulled pork. My meal here was a small pile of pale, flavorless, shredded, unwhelming pork that desperately needed some spice and smoke. The sauce is typical vinegar based, but is also one-dimensional. There are far better places to get pulled pork than here.

In addition, the service was poor - we were given another table's meal at first, and it wasn't that busy!

The only redeeming thing is that the brunswick stew was pretty decent. Other than that, I can't reccomend Bill Spoon's for good barbecue, since it tastes like oven-baked pork, not smokey, spicy barbecue!

BBQ

by fredthorp

I have been eating here for many a year. Bill's is the best chopped BBQ around. Great people, service, price, and of course food. If you have't been-go soon. Only open 10am-3pm. Talk about bankers hours.

Good food, good fun! Try this place out.

by gkfio

Just moved from California to South Carolina. Love BBQ and was anxious to try some of the local flavor. Bill Spoon's was my first taste of the Eastern NC style. The chopped pork was moist, tender and delicious;especially with some of the vinegar based BBQ sauce on top. The slaw and brunswick stew were both very tasty, too. Super fast, super friendly service! The lunch special includes chopped pork, slaw, a side of potatoes, baked beans or brunswick stew, a small basket of hush puppies, and a bottomless cup of sweet tea all for eight bucks! But, when you get to the register, make sure you have cash, a check or even your promise to pay Mr. Spoon. No plastic!

They use the whole pig and, as the sign says, "it makes all the difference."

The Scene
Save for the mural on the back wall, the inside of this little joint is spare. But folks haven't been coming here since 1963 for the decor. They're here for the barbecue, plain and simple.

The Food
The barbecue is just the right juiciness with a fair amount of seasoning. It's eastern North Carolina-style, so don't expect to find a drop of anything remotely tomato to touch this stuff. It's good enough to eat with no sauce, but give the house hot sauce, a zingy vinegar-based concoction, a try. The hushpuppies keep coming, as does the sweet tea. Cole slaw, not too tangy, is as good as you'll find anywhere. Baked beans, the third member of the Carolina triumvirate, are just the right consistency.

TASTY, DELISH!!

by gritsgirlz

This place is DELICIOUS. Just perfect Eastern NC barbecue! And you can buy the sauce!!!

Just wonderful for me. I bought three bottles of sauce just to take with me back to Miami so I can cook my own pork butt and drench it in this sauce (I am from Eastern NC).

There is just nothing like it. I just wish they had the tasty brunswick stew and flat cornbread like Rogers BBQ of Charlotte did in days past.

  • Pros: Down home personal service, delicious bbq sandwiches!
  • Cons: none

I don't even like "Eastern style"

by cmoorebutz

...but I love this barbecue! This is the only eastern NC style barbecue I will eat and I will go out of my way for it! The cole slaw is fantastic and it is good enough to eat by itself rather than as a condiment. Try the banana pudding - they encourage you to every chance they get, but listen to them because they know what they're talking about! This is one of the best values of a lunch you will find in Charlotte. Where else do you get greeted by the owner? He makes you feel like family when you're here! Just make sure to check the business hours before you go, because they aren't standard for most restaurants.

  • Pros: Atmosphere, Price, Great flavor
