Delicious Mexican Food
by zzazazz
I surprised by the negative reviews I have seen here. I've been going to this place for ten years and I love it. The wet burritos are huge and only cost $5. The carne asada and chicken tacos are the best.
- Pros: Super friendly staff
- Cons: none
Was hoping for better

I've been on the quest for the great burrito. I am a lover of beans and am always disappointed when this essential foundation of Mexican cuisine is a failure; I have little faith in a restaurant's ability to cook more complicated dishes when they can't get the beans right. The beans were bad...they tasted like flavorless paste. When I ask for something simple like a bean burrito I shouldn't get a confused look nor should it be stuffed with fillers (lettuce, rice, etc). A great burrito is simply the filling, maybe some onions, salsa, cilantro.
The carne asada was okay (chewy and cheap), the chips and salsa were good. The prices were cheap but I think it's time to go to one of the taco carts on South instead.
It was awkward having to go to the cash register to pay without getting the check.
- Pros: Chips and salsa, prices
- Cons: Food, location, and environment
Don't Get It

Moved to Charlotte 4 months ago from Atlanta and have been STRUGGLING to find some good mexican. After reading the good reviews here, my wife and I decided to venture over. I don't understand the positive reviews unless these people have never had good mexican before. The chicken on my quesadilla was extremely poor quality, very dark in color, chewy, and fatty. The salsa seemed to be made with tomato paste, onions, cilantro and nothing else. Completely inedible. The hot sauce that is brought to the table. Can't put my finger on it but it taste strange. Tostada and taco were bland and ingredients seemed to be poor quality (steak was fatty and chewy). The cheese dip with chorizo was good I must say.
I hate saying this since I don't like going to chain restaurants, but On the Border may be the best mexican I've had in Charlotte. Maybe there are better local mexican restaurants out there but I'm sick of wasting meals on some of this crud.
- Pros: Cheese Dip w/ Chorizo
- Cons: Food isn't very good.
Excellent Mexican, cheap prices
by aravenel
Some of the best Mexican I've had, especially in Charlotte. Tiny, hole in the wall place, but excellent food, and the prices can't be beat. I had a taco and burrito, both of which among the best I've ever had, and my total was just over $5. Can't beat that, especially considering how large the burrito was--I could only eat half of it. Try the pork adobada (spicy marinated pork) or the chorizo--both were superb.
- Pros: Excellent food, excellent prices.
- Cons: Somewhat hard to find, hole in the wall. But that can be a good thing...
best mexican food in charlotte

Nowadays, taquerias are all over charlotte but none of them can compete with taqueria mexico. I'm the kind of person who can seriously live off of mexican food, and I have been eating at taqueria mexico for the last ten years. The prices are incredibly low, you can often buy two entrees here for what you would spend on one at a fancier restaurant. The staff is very friendly, they certainly speak enough english to accomodate anybody. My parents became such frequent customers that the staff recognized them and would bring them their usual meal and unsweet tea each visit without being prompted.
What really makes their food stand out is the way the meat is seasoned. The chicken has incredible flavor, it's very juicy and there is just the right amount of herbs. Anyone can grill chicken or steak and throw it in a tortilla, it's far more important to have adequate flavor and there is no shortage of that here. They only use monterrey jack cheese which leads to a very robust taste in quesedillas, burritos, and tacos. Their meals used to be very bare bones, just meat and cheese, but they revamped their menu several years ago to make liberal use of lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole and sour cream as accents to their dishes.
Take a friend or a date there, you won't regret it!
Affordable South Boulevard restaurant draws lunch-goers from all over Charlotte.

In Short
Televisions are tuned to Univision and the clientele is heavily Latino at this affordable Mexican restaurant where service is quick and tables turn over fast. Prices are the real highlight--even the most ravenous eater can fill up for $10 or less. Office workers from as far as uptown lunch on crispy taquitos, soft tacos and plump flautas. Seafood fans go for the super-spicy camarones a la diabla (shrimp of the devil).
Quienes mas macho?

Taqueria Mexico esta mas macho!!! This is the only restaurant in Charlotte I will go to for Mexican food. Don't come here if you're looking for Taco Bell, that's for kids! Grow up and order some authentic tacos from here and you'll never run for the border again! This hidden gem is the find of the year!
Authentic

I'm often the only gringo in the restaurant, which is often the best sign that you're eating authentic Mexican food. The only establishment that rivals Taqueria Mexico is Restaurant Y Taqueria La Unica on Central Ave.
- Pros: superb seasonings, sizzling salsa, quality meats
- Cons: location
