Convenient to CLT airport
by Daddydart
Copal Grill reminds me of me. A little bit old, a little bit beat up, not much to look at, but they can still get the job done.
One of the best steaks (rib eye) I have ever had. Cheap too.
The Warden (my Darling wife) had the Veal cutlet. Huge portion of Spaghetti.
Glad we stopped by.
Our area was NON Smoking, for which I was very grateful.
I believe the fried chicken was good too, because the guy in a nearby booth was wearing a chicken leg OUT!
- Pros: Great Steak
- Cons: Lumpy booth cushion
Non-Smokers? Fuggedaboutit!

The Copal has been a Charlotte mainstay for years, and a popular place for airport employees to dine. There are daily specials and the food is economically priced. Make sure you leave room for Jello, because that is a free dessert offering! :)
However, as much as I enjoy the cheap eats, I cannot STAND to eat in this place. There isn't a non-smoking area to be had, and if you get stuck in the back room, where the ventilation is HORRIBLE, you will die of second-hand smoke on the spot. If you don't mind the smoke, fine, otherwise eat at a non-busy time or get your order to go.
- Pros: Daily specials, free jello (with whipped cream!)
- Cons: No non-smoking section and they don't care
Discover the diner where Charlotteans once flocked for steaks and chops.

Required Eating
You'll still find steaks and chops (both pork and lamb), as well as sandwiches, chopped barbecue, spaghetti dishes and terrific fried chicken--in portions that guarantee take-home next-day lunch.
On the Side
Breakfast is equally as satisfying. Don't miss the baked apples (better than mom's) or the butterscotch pudding.
History and Hootie
The Copal Grill has been around for 50 years--long before Hootie and the Blowfish featured it in one of their music videos. It's truly a step back in time, with paneled walls, formica tables and burgundy naugahyde booths that have seen better days. The service, however, is incredibly friendly--most of the servers have been here forever--and the food always comforting.
the secret is out!

Believe it or not, this little retro diner has the best steaks in Charlotte. They're cut on the premises, not pre-packaged. Don't be fooled by the old building or location, just go eat a steak and find out for yourself!!!! yummmmmmmmm!
- Pros: cut of meat, quality, low cost
- Cons: it's closing :(, for airport , parking
