Once a house of God, now the home of a different kind of spirit that moves you.

The Skinny
What started out life as First Baptist Church became, in 1976, a home for arts education and performance in Uptown Charlotte. The Spirit Square complex comprises not only McGlohon and Duke Power Theatres, but offices, classrooms, and six art galleries. Music, dance, and comedy all come alive here.
A show in McGlohon Theatre is a true experience. Because it was the original church's sanctuary, stained-glass windows line the walls and a dome sits over the center of the theater. Here you will see Spirit Square Attractions, a mix of different cultural entertainment including jazz, like the Marcus Roberts Trio and country, like Kathy Mattea.
The center takes seriously its commitment to community education and invites young and old alike to take classes in the visual and performing arts. Among many local outreach programs, Spirit Square arranges for performing artists to provide unique, fun, educational opportunitiessuch as Wynton Marsalis teaching music to school kids with the help of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
