From biplanes to space capsules, this museum shows why North Carolina is "First in Flight.". The Space
Housed in the original hangar built for Charlotte's first municipal airport, the Aviation Museum offers a chance to get up close and personal with flying machines from all eras, from prop-driven biplanes to a replica of John Glenn's Mercury capsule.

Giving NC its Props
The centerpiece of the museum is a twin-prop 1942-model DC-3, fully operational, restored by Piedmont Airlines in 1987. There's also enough military aircraft, including jet fighters and Vietnam-era UH-1 "Huey" helicopters, to make you start humming "Ride of the Valkyries," just like in "Apocalypse Now."
