Center of the Earth, center of the arts scene..
The Skinny
In 1985, Ruth Ava Lyons and J. Paul Sires began their own art gallery. They renovated a building on the main street of a now-defunct cotton mill village. Thus was born Center of the Earth Gallery and with it, the entire North Davidson Street cultural renaissance.
Ruth and Paul are devoted to collecting, showcasing, and selling original works of fine art in all forms, including glass, paint, sculpture and the odd textile. A visit to the gallery is especially rewarding on one of the evening openings during Historic North Charlotte Gallery Crawl, held on the first and third Friday of each month from 6pm to 9:30pm. On those evenings, you might meet sidewalk musicians and belly dancers, sample a variety of food and drink, and experience several galleries in this new art mecca.
Center of the Earth was voted Best Gallery three years running by Charlotte's Best magazine, and Lyons and Sires have been recognized for their contributions to community revitalization with the Governor's Award for Businesses in the Arts.
