Editorial Review for Nikko Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar – by Susan McDevitt
The Scene
Nikko's atmosphere is clean, bright and uncomplicated, with light wooden booths and tables. Jazz tunes float in the background. Such simplicity makes the colorful dishes stand out even more. If you need assistance identifying your choices, you can refer to the tabletop illustrated guides. This isn't just food, it's an adventure.
The Food
Put your trust in the hands of your server and you might end up with the daily special Super Crunchy Roll (with shrimp tempura) or the "Sushi for Two" plate. Both are excellent choices, although the quantity rightfully could be called "Sushi for Many." The combination of 20-something pieces of sashimi and maki arrives at the table delicately arranged and presented in a ship-shaped box. Lunch is more subdued and less filling. The perfect-sized meal fits in a bento box--a divided tray--of California rolls and sushi: tuna, salmon, white fish and crab.

! have been to many restaurants around the Charlotte area and I have to say that Nikko will always have my business! Everything about it is great! The only complaint I have is the music. The hostesses were nice, the tall one (sorry to say I don't know her name) will take great care of you. I was informed they did not have a cocktail server anymore but when I asked if I could get a snack while I waited she brought me to a bartender and got my order in for me! The service was wonderful! Joanna did her sake bombs with the table (a must if you go there). The food was great as always. (I recommend the Alex roll) Overall Nikko is the best in town. Be prepared to wait, especially on the weekend, but it's worth it!
Pros: great service, helpful hostess, wonderful food
Cons: loud music, long waits

My boyfriend and I used to go to Nikko's all of the time. They used to have the best sushi for your buck in Charlotte! And the waitresses and hostess were really nice. The old restaurant had a relaxed attitude, so we could go there in our jeans and t-shirts after a hard week and still get some really good food. However, since they moved to their new location, things have gone downhill rapidly. First of all, they raised the prices of everything on the menu. That wouldn't be off-putting in and of itself but with the other changes, it's unacceptable. For example, we showed up for our first visit to the new location looking like we always have - jeans + t-shirt. You could feel the glare from the hostess eat right through you! Also, all of the platinum blond, dressed to the nines, stuck-up yuppies in Charlotte seemed to be there. I swear these were people that had never been to Nikko's before and had probably never had real sushi! But the disco-like atmosphere of the new place seems to attract them like flies to honey. And they WILL look down at you if you're not absolutely gorgeous and fancily dressed. Add to all of this the fact that WE were told that we couldn't get reservations but later overheard the hostess taking a reservation for someone else. Clearly, this person was more important than our lowly selves who, despite our loyalty, were no longer good enough. And the waitress badly messed up our order...three times! I had to wait two hours for one lousy order of tuna sashimi! Needless to say, we no longer patronize Nikko's. It's sad too, because they did have the best sushi in Charlotte. We're still on the lookout for a new sushi place to go to, somewhere I can wear my frickin' t-shirts!
Cons: Overpriced, snobby, long waits, rude staff
