The Scene
This place might as well have a sign: Hip People Only. Young and young-ish professionals hop from table to table greeting each other. Couples linger over the sushi bar. Stainless steel fixtures give the place an edgy feel, while a half-dozen wall-mounted TVs show Japanese animated cartoons. Dance music lends deafening rhythms, and the chefs and servers yell hello and goodbye to customers in Japanese.
The Food
This isn't a good place if you're easily overwhelmed. The menu lists about 60 varieties of nigiri, maki and temaki sold by the piece and another 32 sushi combinations. Then there are several more pages of sashimi, Japanese dinners, yakitori, tempura and seafood dishes. Everything is artfully displayed and wonderfully fresh, even if the sushi pieces are almost too large to handle with chopsticks.

If you're looking for very affordable sushi, Ru San's is the place to go. Very cheap and has sushi for even vegetarians. And if you don't like sushi, they have a huge selection of other genres. However, if you're looking for a fancy and romantic place, this isn't the place for you. Ru San's is very casual and they play very loud techno/trance music. And if you have a problem with waiting really long for your food or bad service, don't go on a weekend around 7:30pm. Now, a lot of people complain how it's not "fresh" or it isn't really "Japanese." Well, "REAL" authentic Japanese food isn't rolls, FYI. To clarify, special maki-rolls found in basically all Japanese restaurants is what we call fusion -- it's not authentic at all. Sushi101 and nikkos isn't what you call authentic Japanese food either. Go to Japan & you'll have trouble finding "Dragon Rolls" and "California Rolls." I really hate it when people write reviews and act like they know sushi just because they always eat these rolls and they know that the red fish inside is maguro and the brown fish on top of the roll is unagi. If you want a glimpse of the real authentic Japanese restaurants in charlotte with THE best and THE most fresh sushi is MIZUHO or MUSASHI (located in South Charlotte). The service isn't the best. But if you haven't noticed, Ru San's doesn't have a computer system. Each server has to write the orders on food checks and for beverages they write it on a SEPARATE beverage check book. And one of the servers' told me they have to separate SUSHI, TEMPURA, AND KITCHEN food on separate food checks AND drop them off at different stations. So, you have to consider that when it gets busy and all that extra stuff these servers have to do, you can't expect 100% great service. I've been a server before, and even though the restaurant i worked in had computers, it still wasn't the easiest job to please everyone.

The sushi at Ru SAn is wonderful, pobably the best in the area; however, the service is terrible! It is loud and chaotic and the goal is to get you to eat quicly and leave. The last and I mean the "last time I will ever eat at Ru San" we were asked to leave after only eating lunch for an hour so they could turn the table to new customers, how rude. Even thought the food is great, I will not be returning..in fact, the direct quote was "look at the door, people are waiting"...I could not believe it! We were paying customers trying to enjoy lunch.
