Editorial Review for La Paz Cantina & Restaurante – by Geoff Lutton
The Scene
Located in a set of renovated warehouses and factories in the historic South End, La Paz has a distinctly urban look to it, though it manages to retain a sense of warmness. Curves and the color purple liven up the interior almost as much as the famously potent margaritas do the patrons.
The Food
The food, though a bit pricey for South of the Border items, will remind you that Mexican cuisine can actually be good. It's not as authentic as some of the places farther down South Boulevard, but you'll enjoy upscale versions of burritos, nachos and all the standards. La Paz is as much about the margarita and the atmosphere as it is about any of the food that comes with it.

Insider Tips
Kick Back and RelaxThe patio, partly shielded from busy South Boulevard by a three-foot brick wall, is a perfect place to have an after-work drink and snack.

...But that was about it. We went to the South Boulevard location for dinner a few weeks ago. It was a weekend night, so of course we expected a bit of a wait. No problem. When we finally got paged, we got to our table (which was not the cleanest...salt and pepper shakers looked gross, dried up-crusty salsa on the side of the table where I was sitting. Service was mediocre. The waitress we got was short and borderline rude. We just blew it off as "she must not be from around here," if you know what I mean. She wasn't the best at being able to describe the food or suggesting anything. Unfortunately, I had a clear view of the back (the area where they get drinks ready and stuff) and I'm not sure about health code or anything, but I saw SEVERAL servers pick up chips with their hands and stuff them on the basket which made me almost gag. This was after we had scarfed down the whole basket of chips ourselves. (Eeew, it's too gross to think about.) Didn't Channel 9 do a story about lemons? I wonder if they can also test the chips. Anyway, for dinner I had the chicken Fajitas. They looked great when they got to the table...but the chicken was so rubbery, I thought I would need a jaw replacement after a few bites. The pepper and onions and the guacamole was good, but $12 is a lot to pay for good peppers and onions, don't you think? The rice and beans where not good at all, no seasoning...yuck! I didn't say anything to the waitress, for fear she might yell at me, and I didn't see anyone "managerial-looking" to bring this up to. The LaPazarita was really good though. So next time, I'm going back for that delicious queso and margarita. But I'll bring my own chips.
Pros: Near the light rail, great Queso restaurant
Cons: Horrible parking, so take light rail, poor service, gross staff habits, chicken

The enchiladas had very little sauce, even smaller amount of filling, rice was pre-packaged mexican rice & the salsa was TERRIBLE..new to the area, very disappointed with the first Mexican restaurant I have tried in NC.
