Terrible Experience. I will never go back to Bonterra. I purchased a gift certificate from the Charlotte half off website and unfortunately when I brought it to the restaurant to use it the waiter was completely rude to me. He seemed annoyed that I had the gift certificate and I was shocked by his attitude. He glared at me and told me that I could not use the $40 gift certificate towards alcohol. I was taking my boyfriend out for a surprise dinner for his birthday and the least expensive entree on the menu was $26. I definitely was planning on spending at least $52 on 2 meals that evening. I explained this to him but he still gave us terrible service all evening. He was late to bring our drinks and our bread. Everyone around us was receiving great service. When it was time to leave I gave him a 20% tip on the entire bill before discount. I only did this to prove to him that he didn't need to be so rude and that I was going to leave him a good tip. I really shouldn't have done that! The total bill came to over $100 so I don't know what this guys problem was. Basically my boyfriend and I left the restaurant hungry and frustrated and I had spent more money on dinner than I ever had anywhere else. What a waste of time and money! I wouldn't have minded that the portions were so small if I had actually received good service. I tried to contact the owners twice via phone but was told by my waiter that I would never be able to reach them. He told me that I needed to write an email from the website which I did, but of course did not receive a response. I also wrote 2 letters in the mail. I wasn't asking for a refund or even an apology. All that I asked from the owners was an explanation as to why they would advertise gift certificates on Charlotte Half Off if they were going to be rude to the customers who actually decide to take advantage of the offer. I would not advise anyone to visit this restaurant.
Excellent Food - Atmosphere good after dark.
Went Saturday night. Valet parked in the parking lot? Little strange but I guess they are trying to avoid the lot being used by the neighbors.
The atmosphere was a bit stark for my taste, with all the white walls - still looked like a methodist church in the day light - suggest adding some fabric to warm up the atmosphere and bit.
The service was good - the waiter was polite and knew the menu - not too pushy and let us take our time. The food was fabulous - can't say enough. We started with the bbq duck spring rolls and the calamari - the calamari was a unique recipe and presentation and was absolutely wonderful.
The filet was cooked to perfection and came with potatoes with a port wine reduction and horseradish - it melted in your mouth.
Wine was fabulous. Wonderful place to take customers, groups, or for a special romantic dinner (after dark).
Could be one of the City's best.
Overall a wonderful experience. My wife and I were in Charlotte on business and went to Bonterra to celebrate our 16th wedding aniversary. We were not disappointed with the food, wine or waiter. Really enjoyed the wine selection (even though it is hard to read on the menu because of the print and deem lighting). We both started with salads (Magnolia and Azeala) which were wonderful. We both had Filet Mignon which was made to perfection. I complimented my steak with a fried lobster tail which was insane! The mixture of the fried lobster with the filet created a wonderful tastebud experience. We finished the meal with a very good creme brule and cappacinos. Abosultely adored the ambience and deep south setting.
I hate to mention a negative, but feel I must since our bill was $325. For that much money, I expect everything to be perfect. Needless to say, they need to work on finding a more personable hostess that has high end restaurant experience. We had made our reservation online through Opentable for 8pm and noted that we were celebrating our 16th wedding anniversary. We were greeted coldly and seated right next to a loud bar filled with afterwork locals. There were plenty of other table selections for her to have put us because the restaurant remained more that half empty the rest of the night. Not only would I had handsomely tipped her for being observant of a couple wanting a romantic dining experience, the review would not had included 500 characters of negavitity on such a good restaurant.
one of my favorites!. This restaurant is wonderful! I enjoy my meal every time and I have never been led astray from a good glass of wine. A little pricey but worth every penny...
Wonderful menu, service and food.
We were looking for a special restaurant and absolutely LOVED Bonterra. Two of us had the fried lobster tail, which was amazing, and the duck and scallops were also delicious. The Magnolia salad was perfect; they gave you a large hunk of goat cheese on top. The individual souffles were amazing and they had an extremely extensive wine list. We did think it was extremely strange that you were forced to valet park but the parking lot was right there. It would have been way easier to park ourselves. The spot was two feet away from the door!
Other than that, everything was wonderful. We will go back for another occassion.
Spectacular all the way around!. Ryan and I were celebrating two years together so he made a reservation about two weeks before we went in last Friday (Aug. 4th). The directions they gave him over the phone were easy to follow, the valet promtly took our car, we were seated immediately, and greeted with fantastic service that continued throughout the duration of the meal. We had been planning to for sometime but hadn't had the chance, however, I now know it was well worth the wait! We started with the extensive wine list, had magnolia salads (with warm goat cheese - delicious) moved onto duck with gnocchi and pork tenderloin with a grit cake and pancetta topped peach - both were tender and very well paired and prepared. Dessert is typically my favorite part of the meal yet here everything was so good it's hard to say it was absolutely my favorite but we were again, impressed. One chocolate molten cake with homemade (slighty tangy - a nice surprise) cherry ice cream and the Barking Dog chocolate sampler we were incredibly full and satisfied. The atmosphere there was perfect for an anniversary - we had privacy, impecable service, an outstanding meal (Ryan has cooked for various upscale restaurants, caterers, and country clubs so he's hard to impress - he was), and the environment was warm, formal without being stuffy. The only thing some may not enjoy is the menu's limited selection of about ten entrees, however, if that's the kind of cuisine you want there's something there for everyone - chicken, fish, beef, pork, duck, etc. Highly recommended to anyone looking for fine cuisine, a welcoming environment, and friendly yet professional staff.
Not quite what i expected. Definetly had a great experience at bonterra. There was about 25 of us for a birthday party a couple of weeks ago and we had an awesome time. We were probably a liitle annoying to the wait staff but you would have never known. The servive was absolutly great as well as the food. It was a little pricey, but what do you expect for incredible food?! I would love to go back for a more intimate setting and a full meal. I look forward to my next visit!!! Complaments to the chef!!
Excellent. One of the finest restaurants in Charlotte. Be prepared to spend over $100 for 2 people because it is expensive but well worth it. Service is excellent and the food was amazing. The server knew exactly which wine to pair with each course and was very attentive to our needs. Impressive interior and elegant styling. Wonderful place to take someone you really want to impress.
Very Classy & Romantic Dinner. The food was excellent & unique! The wine list was amazing & the waiter was very helpful. We had reservations & were seated upstairs in the balcony at 6pm on a Saturday. It was very quiet. Within the next 2 hours, the restaurant filled up downstairs at the tables & wine bar. It was noisy down there & much more casual. I was so glad to be upstairs for our romantic dinner & glad that we went early. The setting is neat, but it doesn't look as "churchy" as I had expected, particularly up in the balcony. The food & service were great though. Recommended as a special occasion restaurant.
A celebrated wine list and innovative American cuisine served in a renovated church..
The setting is impressive: Partners John and Buddy Duncan have spent some money to upgrade a 100-year-old church-turned-gardening shop into a clean, airy dining spot. The textured walls are cream-colored with dark wooden accents, including a curved balcony and an elegant bar.
The wine list is impressive, offering 200 wines by the glass from bottles kept in custom-designed refrigerated cabinets. Servers happily make suggestions for matching wine to dinner. Crab cakes and seared jumbo scallops make nice starters. For the main course, try the pork loin (juicy and tender around its apple walnut stuffing) or the grouper, which is one of the best seafood dishes in town. For dessert, the large creme brulee has a silky body and the perfect crunch, and the chocolate pyramid is worthy of the sweet tooth gods.
