Tips for Mert's Heart & Soul

Mert's. My family and I had dinner there last Saturday and it was very disappointing. The salmon cakes were mushy, chopped bbq was very sweet, and the pork ribs were dry, cold and had no seasoning. I told the sever about my ribs and she looked as though she wanted to say so what! No manager ever came by so we paid and left, my dog did enjoy them. I won't eat there anymore. the fried chicken and cornbrd were good (a little sweet for me).

Good Southern Cookin. Mert's is a good old fashioned southern restaurant with great food. Located on 5th and College (right next door to Buckhead Saloon) it's a nice spot for lunch, especially on the weekends when it tends to be a little less busy.

As soon as you sit down, you are greeted by a smiling face and nice pile of homemade hot and fresh Cornbread which is my favorite in the city. As far as meals are concerend, almost every time I go to Mert's I get the fried chicken breast meal. The chicken is flavorful and juicy cooked perfectly. The side dishes, traditionally southern, range from greens to mac and cheese, the latter being my choice. The mac and cheese at Mert's is as good as any other southern restaurant and town.

There is a small patio outside for dining, but it fills up fast, especially during the week. Parking like I said can be a pain due to all the construction going on across the street, but if you can't find a spot right on College, it's worth walking a couple blocks to sit down and chow down.

Delicious!. Loved the veggies... fresh greens, wonderful mac & cheese and the food had just the right spice. The cornbread was amazing. Great sized portions. Wonderful soul rolls to start the meal with, but this was a small portion. Will definitely be back!

Terrible Food. I was very disappointed in the food and environment. There was no seasoning on the food and the portions were small and not worth the money!

Great food and atmosphere, ruined by lack of sanitation-. I used to love this place for country eats and a great brunch. When I went there awhile back and was enjoying an omelet, I pulled out a long, stringy black hair. Looked back to the kitchen and there were several uncovered heads with hair flowin'. Turned everyone at my table off. This is a simple thing to fix, though, and hopefully they will.

Delicious food & awesome service. Food was great! Had the ribs & oh my god, the meat just pulled right off the bone --no need for knife & fork. The barbeque sauce was perfect-not too spicy, but not too sweet. The cornbread was the icing on the cake. We were seated right away & didn't wait long for the food at all. Would definetly go again if I'm ever in Charlotte area.

Great food, fun environement. We usually go for the brunch, which if you are looking for a good Southern breakfast, is fantastic! We've also gone for lunch and the mac and cheese is mouth watering.

I always find something new to look at when I'm there.

This Charlotte restaurant takes meat-and-three to a higher level.. The Scene
Owner/Chef James Bazzelle out-decorated his competition. He hired Shook Design Group, responsible for some of the hipper establishments in town, to create a jazzy, African-American-themed joint. Mert's is slam-packed at lunchtime, as Uptown workers stream in and out. Other times are quieter, though watch out if there's a show at the Blumenthal. Lunch and dinner menus are the same--cheap--which makes it a great place to make a night of it Uptown and still have some cash left over.

The Food
Bazzelle, a Georgia boy, serves mouthwatering Southern dishes taken a few steps further than other country cooking places. Shrimp and grits come heavily seasoned with a touch of gravy stirred in, and a pimento cheese sandwich arrives on focaccia bread. Don't leave without tasting the macaroni and cheese or the banana pudding. Loyalty may prevent you from saying aloud that they're better than your mama's, but you'll know the truth.

Don't leave without tryin the salmon cakes. Made from fresh salmon instead of canned salmon. Fresh greens, and a short wait for a table...also...Parking on the street is hard to find, but they validate parking in the Holiday Inn parking decks.
