The food is excellent & the service has always been good. It's a bit small, but gives it that "warm" neighborhood bar feel. I Honestly think it'd take away from it's charm if they were to expand the building size. Perfect the way it is! Check out their dish called "What It Is". A GREAT spicy pasta dish that I get just about everytime I go there.
Great place for dinner and relaxed atmosphere. I went to this restaurant on a Monday night. We ordered an appetizer.. a cup of spicy crab soup.. it was so delicious. I definitely recommend trying this! We then had a couple drinks and ordered the shrimp marsala.. which was also delicious. Our waitress was very attentive and very friendly. We had the brownie for dessert, which wasn't as great as the rest of our meal.. it tasted more like fudge, but if you like fudge then you would probably like the brownie. Overall, this was a very pleasant experience and I will definitely be returning.
Terrible Service, Bartender is rude. We had a reservation and according to the host, they were 30-45 min behind in service. He told us we could go to the bar and have a drink ON THE HOUSE for having to wait. We all ordered a beer or glass of wine and when we were seated, the waitress asked who had which drink to add to our tab. We explained what the host told us and she replied rudely "No he would never do that" She got the bartender who started to tell us that we all must have selective hearing. We asked for the host to come over and we asked him directly, did he not offer us a drink on the house? He wouldn't look us in the eye and said no he didn't then scurried off. We all were shocked! My friend told the bartender and waitress that we could totally afford our own drinks, that wasn't the issue. We were being treated poorly for a mistake their staff made. The bartender and waitress then said some other very rude things to us about our "selective hearing" and that it must be a misunderstanding on our part. We decided to pay for the drinks and leave. As we were leaving the bartender stood at the door with his arms crossed, glaring at us like we were common criminals. I have never been treated so poorly in my life at an establishment. The other patrons around us even commented that they were 100% in the wrong. So terrible service, lying hosts and rude bartenders. I would never go back there.
Alexander Michaels. A Cheers place with great food in a Victorian neighborhood in the middle of Uptown Charlotte. Non smoking and great for a date. This is not a burger joint, even though they've got a good one. TVs are on mute and the recorded music crosses all spectrums.
Great Choice, Especially If You're A Non-Smoker.
AM's in the 4th Ward has great atmosphere and good food. The service was fine as well during my visit.
What's really appealing, for me personally, is the fact that smoking is not allowed during normal dining hours.
It's high time The State Of NC place an out right ban on smoking in public bars and restaurants but until they do, hanging out at a place like Alexander Michaels will work for me.
In a city changing more rapidly than any in the country, authenticity takes a stand in Fourth Ward..
The Skinny
Often called Al Mike's or A.M.'s, this bar has a supremely comfortable feel, both inside and out. Dark wood paneling throughout lends a warm, worn feeling. Locals and folks from all over town gather here each afternoon to soak up the relaxed atmosphere and work off job-related stress. Sitting at the corner of Ninth and Pine in Fourth Ward, the view in front of Alexander Michael's looks like it belongs in another city. If there were more shops or restaurants around, you might think you were standing on a quiet corner in Charleston or Georgetown. Do yourself a favor and take a walk through the neighborhood while you're here.
The Goods
The rich atmosphere is augmented by an excellent beer selection, including imports, domestics and microbrews. The food is standard pub fare, but it's well prepared, well seasoned and well presented.
burgers are huge !!!!!.
Every time I visit Charlotte to see my family (Fort Mill, SC), since the early 90's, I have stopped by this restaurant and have always been happy with the service and quality of the food .
Even when I would stop by alone, I would be greeted like a king!
I especially loved the unique atmosphere set in a historic section, I can not recommend this restaurant enough...please go and try !!!
My favorite spot is the front bay window table...can't wait for my next visit to stop by !

Great find off the beaten path. This place is tucked into the heart of uptown Charlotte in the quaint neighborhood of 4th Ward. Great menu with lots of options. Try the "What It Is" and the fried pickles! Go early on the weekends to avoid the crowd.. especially in the winter.
Amazing Nachos!!. Alexander Michael's definitely makes the best nachos I have ever had. If you're feeling generous you can order them as an appetizer to share, but after that first bite, you will want them all to yourself!!!
Alex Michael's.
SOOOO ideal for a first date:
--The neighborhood is so dear that you already feel warm and cozy before you've stepped foot indoors.
--And it not too quiet nor too loud for those quiet types struggling to keep the conversation movin.' It's JUST right.
...OR your 40th date:
--A true "neighborhood bar" where a first name basis is a promise if you keep up on your end of the deal.
