James K. Polk, our 11th president, spent the first 11 years after his birth in 1795 on this property in southern Mecklenburg county. Now a historic site, the memorial, which was reconstructed and furnished with period pieces of the early 1800s, commemorates significant events in his life and administration. The visitor center features free exhibits, picnic facilities and guided tours.
