Editorial Review for Tony's Ice Cream – by Anne Sclater

The Scene
Yellow tile walls and red vinyl booths are the fanciest things you'll see at this decades-old Gastonia landmark. It's strictly counter service--place your order, wait for it and hope to find a seat. If it's a weekend night, good luck. Prepare to get your cone "to go" at this popular teen and family hang-out.

The Food
Tony's serves basic fast food--hotdogs, hamburgers, etc.--but that's not the reason to go. Once you taste the ice cream you'll realize there's no need to have dinner at all. The flavors aren't as exotic as a certain Vermont-based chain offers, but there's no mistaking the homemade-on-the-spot taste. Try pineapple or peach if you're feeling daring, or a three-flavor banana split if you're beyond hungry. Portions are huge, so order conservatively.

Insider Tips

Know Your Dough

The cookie dough ice cram isn't bad, just different: There are no chocolate chips. Don't expect a clone of something you tasted elsewhere.

Shake It Up, Baby

Milkshakes here are a meal unto themselves, made with the equivalent of at least four scoops of ice cream. Don't plan to order one alongside dinner.

As a resident of Gastonia and the daughter of a BBQ man from Greensboro, I know a good hot dog and Tony's has a pretty good hot dog. Not as good as JW Nuckles from Greensboro, but fair. Have tried their Ice Cream and don't see the big deal. West End in Greensboro tops them all. As for Tony's, beware of their French Fries, as either their oil is low quality or they don't change it very often....otherwise Hot Dogs are decent.

Pros: Good Hot Dogs, Lemon ice cream

Cons: Nasty French Fries...bad grease
