This means top quality medicine paired with a sensitivity to the needs of your family. We recognize that there are many factors that come into play for each patient and their family. We strive to listen to and address all of these needs. We take great pride in the amount of time devoted to educating our families. We will always treat your "family members" as if they were our very own. We are honest, hardworking, and very good at the medicine that we practice. Mostly we love what we do and we have a fun time doing it! …
very grateful for this veterinarian. Our three-year-old Maltese had been sick on and off for months. Her prior veterinarian had given a diagnosis of a disease that is usually terminal, so nothing could be done to alleviate any of the symptoms: it was just the natural progression of the disease. Needless to say, we were horrified, but also puzzled since our dog didn't seem consistently sick. Out of desperation we decided to take her to Dr. Wheelock, who had just moved his practice into our neighborhood. We figured it couldn't hurt. He carefully examined our dog and said it was very unlikely she had that disease because she was just too healthy. He immediately had a suggestion for what could be making her sick -- a parasite -- and prescribed medicine. She was totally 100% recovered within one day of starting the medicine and has been in perfect puppy-like health ever since. Obviously, we are incredibly relieved and grateful that he took the time to listen to our long drawn out story and to take a fresh look at our dog's problems. If you're reading this, thank you so much Dr. Wheelock!!
A vet who truly works from the heart. We have a wonderful little pet rodent named Oreo. Some filter on this website won't let me write what she is, so reverse the word tar. It was flagged as "inappropriate." Therein was the problem when Oreo developed a massive tumor 25% of her body weight. My 9 year old was in tears offering up her birthday money to help fix Oreo. I am primarily a dog lover and thought that this small rodent type of pet would be low maintenance. Since then I've found that they are almost as personable as the dog and letting this tumor "run its' course" was unacceptable. Now to find a vet who would understand. Some vets I called referred me to not so local "exotics" specialists who qouted very scary $estimates. Finally I came across Dilworth Animal Hospital's website. I was impressed by the variety of animals that they clearly enjoy caring for. After a very encouraging phone call explaining the situation, type of pet etc. I brought Oreo to their office. What a pleasant experience! It is the best of a nice home environment with confident capable welcoming staff. I knew Oreo was in good hands. The massive tumor was removed and Oreo is back to cheering everyone up with her friendly, playful nature. Dr. Wheelock understood our dilemma with a young but not very long life span creature (3-5yrs), that had a correctible but otherwise straight downhill problem. Plus the kids' hearts being all wrapped up in the situation and he worked with us on a more reasonable cost. Better yet. I've found a wonderful new veterinarian that I look forward to bringing all of my animals to in the future. We left a wonderful vet behind when we moved here 3 years ago. Finding Dr. Wheelock here in Charlotte definitely will help us feel more settled in knowing we now have a great resource to take care of all of our pets. Thank you Dr. Wheelock and all of the staff at Dilworth Animal Hospital!!
Wonderfully Compassionate Veternarian. I happened upon Dilworth Animal Hospital and the first thing I noticed was the veterinarian (Dr. Wheelock) answered his own phone when I called in a panic one day. My dog was out of pain meds and has cancer. He was kind enough to sell me a small supply of meds until I could get back to Waxhaw to her regular vet. I felt the warmth and caring of the Dr. and his staff immediately. It was the beginning of a wonderful experience for both me and my dog. We scheduled a regular appointment with Dr. Wheelock so she could get established. The visit was amazing. He spent so much time with her, getting to know her and discussing treatment options. He wrote a 3 page report card for her that covered everything we discussed. He spoke with me, not at me and made her feel like she was the only dog in the world. The outcome was a change in meds that has given her back the ability to jump in bed; she can now run and has much more energy. I am so grateful for Dr. Wheelock ? he shoots straight and really cares about the animals. If you are looking for a good veterinarian, he is your man.
Excellent Veterinarian!!! So glad he opened his own animal hospital!. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Wheelock and the Dilworth Animal Hospital. We used to go to another animal hospital in the University area where Dr. Wheelock used to work and he was able to diagnose and treat our Akita, when no one else could figure out what was wrong with her. When we found out that he had opened his own office in Dilworth, we followed him down there and now take all our animals there, even though it's on the other side of town. He has great bedside manner with the animals and truly cares about them. He is always willing to call you and asks you to call him with any questions. Any time we have taken our dog in to be treated, he always follows up with a call at home. I feel comfortable and confident with Dr. Wheelock and would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a veterinarian.
Dr. Weelock is the best.
When we first got our pom "smokey" we took him to Dr. Weelock for his vet care I was very impressed with his bedside manner and his loving nature for animals. This is a Dr. you can always count on day or night to answer any questions or concerns, never gives you the run around and always does what he thinks is best.
I would highly recommend him for a vet. The staff is always delighted to see you as well and pays alot of attention to your pet. Dr. Weelock is the best!!!!!!!
Searching for an Exceptional Veterinarian? Look no further than Dr. Matthew Wheelock.
We are so excited to have Dr. Wheelock in the Dilworth neighborhood closer to where we live. He has provided excellent health care for our two French Bulldogs, Lilly & Sadie, since they were pups. They are now four years old. The French Bulldog is a breed with brachycephalic syndrome (their famous flat faces). This carries a number of health implications, some of which are quite serious, sometimes deadly. Others can negatively impact a dog?s quality of life, as was the case with our Frenchies? they could not easily breathe. Dr. Wheelock suggested corrective surgery. So at the time they were spayed, Dr. Wheelock surgically corrected their soft palate and nares so that now, they breathe without any labor or snorting. They are stealth!
When Sadie tore her ACL, he referred us to an excellent orthopedic surgeon who repaired her knee. Dr. Wheelock has cared for them through food allergies, skin rashes, ear infections, bladder infections and a nasty episode involving wild mushrooms. We are especially confident in his medical expertise and the high quality of care that he and his staff provide. We know that we can call on him anytime of the day or night and that he will be there for us. We are fortunate to have Dr. Wheelock in our community.
The vet you've been looking for..
Doctor Wheelock has taken care of my animals for YEARS.
Care and compassion ... coupled with honesty, focus and genuine interest.
(And I appreciate that he actually honors appointment times!)
He's a good doctor and a good man.
I met Dr. Wheelock over a year ago while he was working at the Harris Blvd's Clinic and have stayed with him ever since. He is by far the best vet that I have ever worked with and I could not be more satisfied with his work. I am a breeder and I have taken him quite a few animals which he has time after time successfully treated, some required medicines others minor surgeries, and all have fully recovered. He knows his stuff and even works with exotics, and you must really love animals to work with exotics :)
I am very happy to see him doing so successfully at his new own practice in Dilworth. I have recommended him to many people and I would definitely recommend him to anyone!
I thank you and more importantly all my pets thank you Dr. Wheelock!
Dr. Mathew Wheelock is an Outstanding Veterinarian!.
I have been visiting Dr. Wheelock and his wife at least twice a month for as long as we have lived here. They have an amazing new facilty! It is a full service hospital, with viewing opportunities in almost every area of expertise.
His staff is extremely professional and always leaves us with a feeling of confidence and appreciation.
Dr. Wheelock is one of the few veterinarians that is truly knowledgeable about exotic reptiles in the entire Charlotte area. He has seen at least 8 of our Panther chameleons. He has done whatever it took to save the lives of more than one of our little guys. He understands how expensive it is to have as many pets as we do.. and he always does whatever he can, to help us out and keep the costs down.
These guys are simply the best! I can't tell you how many times I have called Dr. Wheelock after hours or on the weekends, and they are always willing to help me!
Recently, Dr.Wheelock performed a really difficult parasite removal of one of our imported chameleons. This proceedure was very involved and time consuming. Dr. wheelock did it for next to nothing. Most vets would have told us just to leave them, (it was 6 nasty little worms that burrow under the skin), Dr. Wheelock would not have it. He made sure our new cham would have a quality of life he deserved.
He is really a good man. I can't tell you how many times he has helped out out with questions, problems, or whatever seems to come up!
We have a 9 month old Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) who likes to visit these guys on a regular basis.
Roman loves to visit Dr. Wheelock, too me that speaks volumes when a 115 lb dog gets excited to go to the vet. The entire staff warmly greets Roman every time we come in!
I will not see anyone else for my animals needs. It will always be Dr. Wheelock and the Dilworth Animal Hospital.
We highly recommend Dilworth Animal Hospital to everyone! Feel free to contact me if you care to discuss...

Dr. Wheelock is more than just a vet, he is your pet's friend too : ). I was THRILLED when Dr. Wheelock informed me that he would be opening his own vet clinic. This will be the 3rd location I have followed him to. I met Dr. Wheelock 5 years ago when he was on staff at the Animal Hospital. I had a tiny pomeranian puppy that was very sick, she was in intensive care for days. Dr. Wheelock was one of the attending physicians and he took extra care with her. I was impressed with his caring manner and attention to detail, he never made me feel rushed. My pom recovered and became very "fiesty" ~ I realized I couldn't let just any one treat her. Only Dr. Wheelock seemed to be able to treat her without getting bit. He has a soothing way with animals. So when he left and went to Harris Blvd Vet Clinic, I started taking her there. Over the years, he has given me so much advice on how to care for her. Then, a year ago, I adopted a sickly male pom. He was my heart and joy. Dr. Wheelock also treated him. But 3 months ago, a horrible accident left him fatally injured. I was devastated. I rushed him to the closest facility (Monroe Road Animal Hospital) and prayed he would live. I collapsed in the waiting room while they treated him. I called Dr.Wheelock out of sheer desperation. AND HE CAME TO THE HOSPITAL. Just to offer moral support. He left his own clinic to come and help me cope. He was so calm and try to offer positive reassurance, but I see in his eyes that things were bad. After a sleepness night, the hospital informed me that nothing else could be done, my little baby had a broken back. I sat in the parking lot screaming in anquish as my family held on to me. I was so grief stricken that I didn't know what to do. So I called Dr.Wheelock, and he told me what I didn't want to hear, but needed to know. I could NEVER had made that decision without Dr.Wheelock's support. My baby is at peace now. Dr.Wheelock is a special vet and person, anyone would be blessed to have him treat their pets.
