Painful, tedious wax, waste of time! – I read all the glowing reviews and figured I would be in good hands at V&V. I was horribly mistaken. I started out with a bikini wax that lasted over an hour (with the technician getting stuck several times with the wax, and pulling very very slowly). I told her to leave the rest, thinking I would get a discount. Then she moved to the eyebrows. I have never had such a shapeless job done to my (easily shaped) eyebrows. I was very specific (thicker in the middle, very thin at the ends) and she waxed them into solid blobs straight across my forehead. No arch whatsoever. The coup de gras came when I got my hair done. After discussing what to do with my too-brassy color for nearly 15 minutes, and showing her a picture in a magazine of the dark brunette/caramel highlights color I wanted, she went to work. Three hours later, poof! There was absolutely no difference in my hair (although it's now a lot drier). She didn't even manage to get out any of the gray on the crown. Thankfully, I asked for and received all every cent of my money back. I would have happily paid the $300+ cost...if I was even in the least happy with the work. I'll never go back!
Charlottes Gem in Concrete – Varji & Varji salon pulls out all the stops and it is worth every penny. Upon entering their lovely salon steps from the South Park Mall, you are greeted by a wonderful aroma, soothing music and you are welcomed in by their wonderful assistants. You are then offered a beverage of your choice and seated in a lovely waiting area for a brief time taking it all in. You are soon whisked away to your stylist and your inner beauty is revived, or transformed. You walk out refreshed and ready to take on the world because you have been treated like royalty and at a very reasonable price.
great – some very good haircuts....1 out of 7 were not
jason left varji & varji – anyone know where he went? Excellent colorist!!
The very BEST in Charlotte! – I am sooooooooooooooo thrilled to find them. I agree with other reviews - they are indeed expensive - but worth every cent! I have paid much more elsewhere, and it didn't compare. Top Notch~~
Compares to the best in NYC. Thanks Max!!!
Max Varji is worth EVERY penny – I recently moved back to Charlotte after being away for 20 years, most recently in Washington, DC. However, in my 10 years there, and many thousands of dollars later, I never found a truly fabulous hairdresser.
I am a 38 year old, single, very successful professional, but I still love to have fun and have a very active social life. I love great fashion and will sell my soul for fabulous Italian shoes and handbags. Let me be clear: I am INCREDIBLY picky. I have very fine, extremely straight hair that will show any kind of bad cut you can imagine.
After an VERY bad haircut and color in my first few weeks in Charlotte, I started doing my research.
That's when I discovered Varji and Varji.
First of all, I was incredibly gun shy, so I requested one of the owners do my hair, and specifically I wanted Max. The salon was able to fit me in for a consult / cut / hil-lite within a week (HUGE PLUS because I work full time and travel a ton).
The staff at Varji and Varji immediately made me feel welcome. Max consulted with me along with his two assistants.
Max took the time to walk me through exactly what he planned to do with my hair. Again--I am picky and have been burned--yet he was incredibly patient, humble, and gently confident. I immediately trusted him.
Max is seriously one of the most diverse hair dressers I have every met. His explanation: "That was my Toni and Guy side vs. my Vidal Sassoon" side. So for those of you who are not aware--Toni and Guy is very European, kind of choppy, unstructured, yet very artistic, piecy and not structured; Vidal Sassoon is the ultimate in the precision hair cut. These two styles could not be more different. Max also does many other styles, including what he calls the "Aveda" style, which is a bit more in between, soft, very pretty. I fall somewhere in between the "Aveda" and the "Vidal Sassoon."
Max is a genius and is capable of anything. His prices are high, however, I will tell you, it is worth every penny. How many of us will pay for a handbag or a dress--and it's still not something you wear every day. And, the cut and color is SO good that I can go almost twice as long without a touch up. I used to pay $80 for a so-so cut that had to be touched up every 4-6 weeks. Do the math, factor all the time you will save by not having to spend as much time styling, and all of the product you will save on (because you will LITERALLY need half), and you will actually come out ahead. BTW, this is the math I use when I justify a new fabulous handbag (cost per use = great value). :)
HOWEVER, if you absolutely can't fathom spending that on a haircut, Max will do a consult and refer you to someone else on his team who is still very talented (this man has VERY high standards). Stay tuned for how one of his top stylists does with my mom . . . . I expect she will leave feeling every bit as beautiful and special as I did.
Love this salon, love the products, love the staff. In the spirit of A Christmas Story, A+ + + + + + +. Varji and Varji in Charlotte, NC has managed to convert a hoity toity yankee biatch (to quote Reese Witherspoon from Sweet Home Alabama). :) I can't imagine anyone leaving here disappointed.
Keep it up, guys!
They're Fantastic! – from the second you walk in you feel welcome! i have been to 2 other well known salons in charlotte and don't get the same friendly vibe as i do at varji. i have been there many times now and not only is the place beautiful, but the stylist (alane in my case) was fantastic! everyone from the front desk, to the owner and manager, to the stylist in the station next to you, are easy to talk to and friendly!! both the owner and the manager always step in to say hi and have remembered my name since the second or third time i ever walked in. pretty impressive for a big place like that. not to mention that every time i walk out of there i feel like alane made me into a whole new person! she runs behind every now and then but she is soooo worth the wait! i love her! i have also seen teresa in their spa and had the best facial of my life! if you haven't already tried them, you should!
Hit or miss – Ive been to Varji & Varji 3 times. On my first trip, I received one of the best haircuts Ive ever gotten. On my second trip, with the same stylist, I received one of the worst. I decided to give them a shot a third time, with a different stylist, and the cut was below average. Overall, the quality does not justify the $45 price.
Max is the best – Max Varji runs a tight ship and has a successful salon because of it. It's true, you get what you pay for and you certainly will pay! Gorgeous salon and very professional. In 11 years, going to Max, I have never waited and am in and out looking FAB! Max makes it his business to make sure you are happy. He will do everything it takes to keep you coming back. If you ever have a problem at Varji and Varji, please tell him. He takes great pride in his salon and staff and will never disappoint!
