Friendly service. Whenever my wife and I want sushi this is where we go. The food is always great and the staff is very friendly. Yesterday I called to ask them when the music on the green starts again. The summer concerts are Friday and Saturday nights 7PM to 10PM May thru Sept. Free fun for the entire family. enjoy.
Decent strip-mall sushi.
I tried Sushi 101 based on CitySearch recommendations and am pleased to report that I enjoyed a decent meal there. It's good, but not spectacular, despite the reputation. Please take careful note of five-star reviews that rave about the California Rolls. Chances are these reviews are written by someone with limited sushi experience.
Sushi 101 has college-town atmosphere. Bright colors are on display, there are a few televisions up on the walls for people to watch, and the Ballantyne shop tends to draw a fairly young (sometimes loud) crowd. It's good for food but wouldn't be my choice for an upscale romantic dinner.
The menu has some variety but fish types are generally limited to "safe" items. You aren't going to find a lot of dishes involving sea urchin - even eel seems to be a bit of a stretch - but if salmon and tuna are your thing you're definitely coming to the right place.
The dishes I sampled were tasty and the fish was firm and cold. This is a fine place to have lunch, particularly if you go with people who are new to sushi. If you take the place for what it is you'll probably have a good meal here. If you go in looking to sample omakase prepared by a traditional japanese chef, you'll be disappointed.
don't judge a book by it's cover.
If the place wasn't so packed with people when we went we would have certainly not eaten sushi here. It's ambience and feeling of cleanliness is lacking. The food however was very good. We had the spider roll, rainbow roll, professor Vu, dragon fly and the super crunch
It was all tasty. The only downside the that the rice was so over-cooked that it was no longer sticky, so each piece fell apart. The martini's were very watery too.
We would definitely eat here again though.

Some people dont like but anyway ilove this place and the owner is pretty nice is the best restaurant in town 3 of them. the sushi guys r so nice 2 if u go there ask for israel they know me say what u find here in this web just good words about sushi 101 and the manager Vu is the best. i love that place the other restaurants is so whatever. i dont like. to expensive bad service no no no i hate that. TRY SAKE BOOM AND DONT FORGET THE TIPS BYE PEACE ISRAEL
Best....maybe. Fun place to eat if you're not looking for the 'best' sushi around. Always a wait but once you're in the service is pretty fast. Best sushi in town doesn't even show up on the list. Tokyo at Toringdon - well at least until their sushi chef quit. Sushi 101 is a close second and now may be the best.
There are better options!. Bad service and medicore food is the norm here. If you are looking for better sushi try Jade in ballantyne Villiage. The sushi is better and The service is impeccable. Not only is their sushi fantastic, but so are thier other asian specialties. Try the 7 Flavor Beef and the Cherry Blossom Roll. Down with sushi 101 up with jade.
As my grandmother likes to say, "You Could Do Betta.". Because Charlotte is completely lacking an authentic sushi restaurant, I find myself trying to make do with what is offered: completely mediocre, unsatisfying sushi. Sushi 101 in Ballantyne came highly recommended, but now the friends who recommended it to us have lost any credit they had with me. The service was decent; our waitress was pleasant and fast. However, the food was unimpressive. The ginger dressing on the salad was straight from a bottle (or perhaps a Sysco plastic jar)--there was nothing fresh about it. The miso soup was nice and hot, but its aftertaste is reminiscient of sweat (and the traditional seaweed). The rice in the sushi rolls was overcooked and crumbled when we picked them up with our chopsticks, and the "aioli" had a glossy look that reminded me of hair conditioner and a taste that reminds me of Miracle Whip. In an effort to glean some positivity from our experience, though, I must say that the tempura shrimp in the super crunchy roll was fried just right, and again, our waitress was quite lovely. Overall, Sushi 101 is the definition of mediocre--we will not be going back.
Editorial Review. With three locations, this charlotte spot serves up sushi in an intimate, traditional environment.
