Transport yourself to the culinary flavors of Jamaica - Great customer service and atmosphere

by Museumdiva at Citysearch

Yesterday, I had the most wonderful experience. A friend came in with this huge plate of spicy chicken, rice & peas, greens and plantain. I was amazed at the amount of food but more importantly was the aroma. It took me to another place where I felt the warm sun and comfort. Immediately, I had to go where this good food was being cooked and served. Right there on Central Avenue is Mama's Caribbean Grill. After not living in Charlotte for a very long time, a person misses the rhythm of the streets that they are from, the smells from familiar neighborhoods and the distinct dialects that make you want to dance.

The kitchen is clean and the food is prepared with the loving hands of Mama. I had to have the curry chicken, yams, rices & peas and plantain. And of course to excite my palate even more I had to have ginger beer. The cost of the food is quite reasonable and if you order a large meal, you have more than enough for the following day's lunch. But go back and get more plantain and ginger beer.

They have island specialties - Ackee and Saltfish. YUMMY! Just the sight of the food makes your mouth water and warms your spirit.

Take the time to go for lunch. Get to meet the staff there. They are friendly and will answer your questions with a smile.

If you just face the counter you are transported to that wonderful island of Jamaica or the streets of Brooklyn. Try it! It is the best!!!!!

  • Pros: Service is a big plus.
  • Cons: Have to park around the corner on Thomas Avenue.

Home cooking

by blackonyx92 at Citysearch

Mama's is real home cooking. I come weekly mostly for oxtails dinner. Her oxtail is cooked true to Jamaica teachings. The meat is well browned and seasoned well. I could only comment on the oxtail dinner. The mac n cheese is over cooked, cabbage and collard green is splendid. Rice and peas cooked to perfection. I would not suggest this place as a sit down restaurant. The decor and kitchen are lacking appeal. It's dark upon entry; the window has been broken since I moved here 4 months ago. She has a large wooden plank in its place. Nothing about the restaurant says welcome. Lots of times her grandaughter tends the register--she's too grown for her own good. She actually tilted the tip jar in my direction. I told her some words. This hole in the wall still manages to serve great food. Take out orders is my recommendation, but please have newspaper in car to catch the leaks. The styrofoam containers without fail are horrible to hold food.

  • Pros: Great oxtails, rice and peas and greens
  • Cons: Decor and service
