Tips for Budget Truck Rental

1.0
April 02, 2009

Left me stranded with NO truck on my moving day!. I used Budget for a long distance, one-way move several years ago, and had a great experience, so I wanted to use them again. I chose the one on Old Statesville Rd. because that's where I dropped off my truck after my last move. This time, however, I just needed a 10' truck for a local move. I reserved the truck online a month prior to my move, to ensure I would have a truck that weekend.

Well, sure enough, the evening before 'the big day,' I get a phone call at 5:59PM (no exaggeration, ONE MINUTE before all the truck rental places in the area close) from the Budget owner, saying they would not have a truck for me first thing in the morning, as I had reserved. He said the best they could do would be around lunchtime. Sure enough, the next day was supposed to pour down rain starting at lunchtime and lasting all day... I told the owner that this would REALLY screw up my moving plans, since we wanted to get it all done before noon, so we could avoid the rainstorms. I also said, "I cannot BELIEVE you are calling me at 6 o'clock, when ALL the other places are shutting down, so now I cant call anyone else to find a truck!!!" His words exactly, "I am doing you a FAVOR by calling now instead of tomorrow morning." Ummm, OK?!?! Unbelievable... Then, he pretended like he didnt know it was going to storm, and said they would definitely have me my truck, at the latest, by the end of the day Saturday, and that I could keep it all day Sunday, at no extra charge. I said, if you can let me have it all day Sunday at no extra charge, then I'll be ok with this arrangement. The owner said he'd keep me posted the next day.

Sure enough, next day comes and I dont hear a word. I call them up around 2pm (they close at 3pm), and the owner says, oh yes, we'll have your truck, come pick up the keys and sign the paperwork before 3. I said, ok, sounds good. When I go and show up over there, the owner is not there. I told the counter person who I was and that I was here to sign the paperwork for the truck, and pick up the keys. He said, well, I dont know what you were told but we have no truck here for you. I said, where is the owner, Joe, who I've been talking with this whole time?? He says, "He's at his mother in law's house." I said wow, great owner! I said, get him on the phone and find out what the h*ll is going on. They call him up and he says, "Oh, I forgot about her." GEE, great. So, again, no truck for me. Now I'm stuck, again. They offered me a cargo van OR a 15' truck with a broken ramp, NEITHER of which would accommodate my move. They said, take our business card and go down the street to U-Haul and tell them we dont have a truck for you, see if they have anything.

Well, Budget's loss was U-Haul's gain, because I went down the street to them and LUCKILY they were able to help me. I got a practically brand new U-Haul 10' truck for less money. U-Haul is where my business will go from now on, do NOT use Budget, it is run by a complete moron (oh, and I did not even receive as much as an apology after all this from the mysteriously vanishing owner, Joe).
