Dedicated to preserving and promoting African-American art, history and culture in Charlotte.. The Skinny
Housed in a church built in 1910, the center hosts nationally touring art exhibitions and plays--notables have included Pearl Cleage's "Flyin' West" and "Discover Greatness: An Illustrated History of Negro Leagues Baseball"--as well as a variety of local music, dance and film programs.

For kids there is story hour as well as special programs such as an alliance with Blumenthal Performing Arts Center and the cast and crew of "Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk" that taught tap and its history to area kids and let them see a performance of the Broadway hit.

Now in its 25th year, the center recently accepted a gift from Bank of America of the Hewitt Collection of African-American art, a private collection that will tour for two years before returning to Charlotte.
