Regret, I would say use another venue – I have thought long and hard about writing this review. After all I do realize that I am affecting someone's livelihood with writing a negative review. But learning from personal experience I wouldn't want for another bride to go what I went through. What was upseting is that the owner believes she can speak to the client any way she wants after receiving the deposit.
The venue could definitely use some touching up. There are nicks in the wall, and the linens they placed on the day of my wedding were wrinkled. This is owned by Darcy Donevan and the manager is Tyler Lee. Darcy is a very irate woman and extremely unprofessional. They waive the rental fee, but they really do get you on other things. The prices they charge on liquor alone, is what you would pay at a club. After placing my deposit, Darcy said they would contact me as the time got closer. Probably what would have saved a lot of confusion is if she was clear in regards to the time frame. For example, okay well we will contact you 2 months or a month before your wedding date to finalizing details. Instead of calling and arguing and getting irate over the phone with me.
They were very professional during the food taste. However, the portion and the quality that is displayed are two different things. What they initially do in the food tasting is set up for up to 4 people. And when they serve the entrees and appetizers they plate it all on one family size plate. So on the day of the wedding obviously everything looked so smaller. Also, our appetizer portion, for example the beef skewers and etc we're literally 1/2 the size of what was displayed, overcooked, and bland. We were thinking of adding crabcakes onto our appetizer menu. The owner wanted to charge us $ 10 per crabcake, it was to be a plated appetized not an h'ordeuvres. That was the size of a 1/2 dollar. Which was absolutely ridiculous.
Also our designer was informed that we would not have to do take down of the design until the next day. But we were told that unfortunately would have to take it down the night of the wedding reception. Because unfortunately, Tyler didn't want to come in the next day to open up. They only allow you to set up the day of because the venue is rented out the day before. They also tried to later on charge me for the time spent setting up for the wedding reception. They claim to have a chef that was previously employed as a head chef at Bentleys and Mimos. I HIGHLY doubt that. I would suggest for people to save their money and go for a venue, that one is more professional.
Great Venue- Excellent Food/Service – We had a company event on 5/7/10 for 125 people. Everything was phenomenal from start to finish. Setup, Food, Service were all amazing. Everyone at the Big Chill was very easy to work with from day 1 in setting this event up! Would definitely recommend and will most certainly return!
Great location – We had our 40th high school reunion at The Big Chill. The room itself was great. Plenty of space for our class. The bar prices were expensive and the food was mediocre to say the least. If I had known the appetizers were better than the dinner, I would have eaten more of them.
great singer – I went there and the music was wonderful. But, the place is over priced and very disorganized. You could tell who the onwer was, she was running around in a state of panic. The lady singing really had the dance floor going otherwise I would have fallen asleep. I don't recommend this place to anyone. My wife was quite upset with the wait time and poor quality food. Needless to say, we wont be back.
The band is the only reason to go!! – I've been to the Big Chill 2 times, and it was for the band. "The Chill Factor" is great. Otherwise, the place would be out of business. I went there to see Gena and they were great, as always. The service was terrible ,we were double charged on my credit card and paying too much for the food (not great) and expensive drinks) At least we were with friends, enjoyed great music and the night went well overall. So, we decided to go again to hear Gena sing. Our host who reserved a spot for dinner and drinks for 45 people, thought for sure since the management knew how everyone's previous experience was before that they would be "on the ball" this time and said "Give them another chance". So, we went back tonight. The party of 45 people were booked inncorectly, for "drinks only", the service without food was even horrible. Our host was told the food would be better and the service great, since they were expecting a full house tonight. As about 45 of us met there, prepared to have dinner, we were disappointed again. That never happened. You were lucky to have a seat, much less dinner and a server to bring you a drink. Luckily, I am a smoker and didn't mind having to go to the bar to smoke since that meant I may get a beer soon (although they only have 4 kinds and they are overpriced, imported beer!!! yes, no bud light, miller lite, etc. ) The line at the bar looked like the line on the dance floor during "Electric Slide" the crowd cheered up as Gena entered, Thank God!. Once again, she pulled the life back here where people where hungry, upset and thirsty. I felt bad for servers who were doing what could to keep the little bit of food they had for a few tables, coming. I sat there, as other patrons vent and wondered when and where I would get to see Gena next. If I ever come back here, which I only will when Gena is there, I will be sure to have a full stomach and drink next door at Dilworth Neighborhood Bar first!
Great Event! – Hosting an event of such class and quality can be tough for a non-profit organization! The Big Chill became part of a team that made the evening a success. The initial surprise came with the amazement of the beauty behind the black awning entry. This brick building on Morehead hosts more than its name elicits. The open and beautifully decorated space provided the perfect canvas for our event. The owner and chef had the staff prepared to meet our needs efficiently and gracefully. The venue was perfect for the 120 some guests to enjoy and elegant evening with music, dancing, and good food. Having a variety of spaces for our auction and cocktails allowed the evening to flow. The open communication was a key to the success. The Big Chill met the needs for our special event. I think they have great things ahead of them. What a great event!
Lousy Service – Went with a party of twelve for a birtday party on a Friday night. We had the whole place to ourselves until another party of about ten arrived. So with a total of about 22 people they still couldn't provide at best minimal service. The place ran out of liquer and totaly confused everyone when the bill arrived. Charges were all over the place. The food is well over priced and not cooked to order. The band was decent, but I don't recommend the Big Chill. We got screwed!
Great Atmosphere... Terrible Service – Had our wedding here just yesterday. Food was great, atmosphere and band were super but the customer service was AWFUL! The owner dropped the ball on too many things to include them all here but a few... ran out of liquor, owner and staff were rude to guests, owner did not fulfill the details of what she assured us she could.
Still the chef was excellent and the band rocked! I'm just sorry I can't recommend the place to anyone.
service? – The band was pretty good. The food is trying to be fancy without much luck, and the service is just unbelievably poor. It's a great concept but the lack of knowledgable, professional service keeps it from being what it could be.
Can I get some elbow room? – My wife and I went for dinner and the show for Valentines Day. The atmosphere was great except for the tightly packed, 6 inched spaced tables! Could not help but feel like they were taking full advantage of the incredibly high price by cramming as many patrons in as possible. If you don't sit in a booth and are a familiar face, forget the service. This is Charlotte, not LA. Some of the worse service I have ever seen. Freddy Cole (Nat King Cole's Brother) was amazing, the fact that the table is yours for the night is also cool but the fact that my wife nearly waited an hour to be poured a glass of water (by a water pourer who was supposed to do nothing but pour water all night!) means no repeat visit. Please advise your waiter/waitresses two hours in advance if you will be needing anything!
