Editorial Review for Ru-San's Sushi and Seafood – by Susan McDevitt

The Scene
This place might as well have a sign: Hip People Only. Young and young-ish professionals hop from table to table greeting each other. Couples linger over the sushi bar. Stainless steel fixtures give the place an edgy feel, while a half-dozen wall-mounted TVs show Japanese animated cartoons. Dance music lends deafening rhythms, and the chefs and servers yell hello and goodbye to customers in Japanese.

The Food
This isn't a good place if you're easily overwhelmed. The menu lists about 60 varieties of nigiri, maki and temaki sold by the piece and another 32 sushi combinations. Then there are several more pages of sashimi, Japanese dinners, yakitori, tempura and seafood dishes. Everything is artfully displayed and wonderfully fresh, even if the sushi pieces are almost too large to handle with chopsticks.

Ok listen. I have read a lot of the bad reviews on this site and all of them are ridiculous. I could go on forever with rebuttal after rebuttal to your ridiculous statements, but in the essence of time I have picked some of my favorites to dissect. Here goes. "Rusans is noisy" Yeah, I hate it when people welcome you to the restaurant with an energetic greeting. I want a hostess with no personality to guide me to my seat as I follow like a lemming enjoying no dialogue or candid banter whatsoever. If you want somewhere to eat where its quiet, eat at home. We dont want you there sneering at people enjoying life anyways. "The service is terrible" Oh, I would hate to be there spending time with my friends or loved ones having extra time to converse about life, or the days events, or anything intellectual. I want my food now, before everyone else, and I want to be treated like the only person in there. Problem is, a LOT of people go to Rusan's because of several reasons, and if you want to be fed with your silver spoon go to Capital Grille and charge up your maxed out credit card. "The sushi is awful" Ah yes, everyone on this site is a top sushi chef and therefore, their opinion is vastly important to the masses. Ok, I accept that this sushi is not the best I have ever had, but for the price it is. If you want to waste all your money on food, go to Nikko or Sushi 101 and spend 30 bucks while I enjoy 50 pieces of sushi for under 20 dollars. Then ill go get ten bucks worth of gas and drive around, because I can. And, if youre not too hungover from going to the bar and trying to meet a future husband/wife, the buffet is the best thing in charlotte for lunch on saturday. The point is, if you have high standards for your life and believe that eating somewhere where the ambience is classic, the service staff treats you like royalty, and your food came straight out of the ocean onto your plate, eat somewhere else. Rusan's for life.

Pros: cheap, convenient, hard to beat buffet on sat

Cons: The ac system scares me when it kicks on

We went there for my birthday and had a horrible time. The menu was confusing with all sorts of asian food jumbled together. It was hard to find a REAL sushi roll even offered. I was disappointed with all of the sushi items we got from the rolls to the nigri. The spicy tuna roll had some weird type of sauce on it that was not meant to be put on top of a sushi roll. My husband is half Japanese so we go out on a regular basis, and this is by fair the lowest quality we have seen in Charlotte. I have gotten better sushi at Harris Tetter. We will never go back. Besides the poor quality of the food, the dining area was so loud I could not even hear myself think. The chefs kept hollering something out while customers were screaming and banging on tables, which was only enhanced by the metal surroundings. I was extremely dissatisfied and will never go back.

Pros: None

Cons: Poor sushi. Loud beyond belief

Fresh sushi in an atmosphere so uptempo that you could mistake it for a dance club.  See the full editorial review.
